Important Ableton Live Option for Samsung Series 7 Slate

OK – found a fix for the sensitive pen.

http://www.modulatethis.com/2009/05/ableton-live-802-wacom-tablet-kore2.html

Do this.  Just do it, if you want to run Live on the Samsung Slate.  Works perfectly.  It doesn’t affect the behaviour if you are using a mouse, but it makes the pen work beautifully, so you can turn dials, edit automation and generally have a swell time with the pen and Live.

Comments:
How is the cpu performing with several midi tracks and VST's running at once? Is it anything but frustrating to work in such a small resolution? Does the touch-screen make it easier and faster to create midi-clips from scratch?

Oh, and how long does the battery last while working in Ableton?

Before I answer your questions, let me give you a bit of context about how I'm using the tablet for music.

I use the tablet at work using onenote/email/word/excel, so it's not dedicated to music.

Also, the main aim is to give me an option to do some production on trains, planes and during my lunch break, which, with 2 kids under 2, is my main opportunity for doing music.

The only VST's I've got are FXPansion DCAM, Tremor and Geist, Bleepbox, Auturia MiniMoog freebie and GForce impOscar2.

I'm waiting on a RME UFX to be delivered, and I'll then add outboard FX and synths to the setup for when I get some time in the studio.

I have a lot of hardware, and the slate will drive it for live gigs.

That out of the way, my experience to date is...

In terms of the CPU, the only thing I've managed to get hiccups on is running FXPansion Tremor with more than 6 engines and multiple effects on each engine, though Tremor is pretty CPU intensive.

I'm not a huge VST user, but I have no problem running the VST's I need, especially if I bounce to audio. I tend to work on one at a time and then render a bunch of stuff into Live Clips, and then move onto the next VST.

I'm working on a song at the moment that's running 8 audio tracks and a single instance of GeForce Imposcar2 with Outlook, Word and Onenote running, and I'm sitting at about 15-17% CPU.

The touchscreen is pretty good to work with. The most frustrating thing is not having CTRL-B to switch between Draw Mode. If I could use the right mouse click of the pen to do that directly without using the context menu working with MIDI would definately be quicker, but it's still pretty quick.

The Pen is awesome with Tremor, and it's pretty quick for working in Live generally.

The screen resolution isn't too bad for working in Live, as you tend to have the screen much closer when working with the Pen.

For mouse and keyboard, it's workable without causing too many problems. Occasional resizing is required, but not too much of a drama in the context of things.

Ableton only just fits on the screen, and some VST's (Bleepbox and impOscar's largest GUI for example) don't fit on the screen, which could cause problems, but so far it's all been working fine for me.

For working with the battery, the longest single session I've done has been about 4 hours and I didn't run out of battery. The slate was on the Samsung Optimized power mode, so it wasn't running at full power, but I had no dramas working with live under this power mode either.

Running the slate continuously with one note, outlook, networking etc, I normally get about 5 hours of battery life. That's continous use taking notes at conferences, while keeping up with emails. I put it on charge during my lunch break and back at it in the afternoon.

Once I get hold of my audio interface, I'll be posting some more info on useability and exactly how I end up setting it up with the KSP8 and external synths.

I aim to have a single rack, APC40, Electribes and the Slate as my mobile rig. I might put the 01x into use as a remote for the UFX mixer, but I'll see how I go. Will post more soon.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, let me know, and I'll do my best to help
